All I want for Christmas ...

No, not a review of the Mariah Carey classic (love it or hate it, you can't escape it...) Instead, I put some Christmas-tinted questions to a big group of my favourite musical artists: the answers are in and they're bangers. There's a taster below, and you can read the full post on my new Substack site: musicobserved.substack.com Please consider subscribing - it's free, don't worry! - so you don't miss any posts in future :-) What do you most hope for this Christmas? Alexandra Leaving: "You could get deep with this one. 2024 has been a defining year. Whilst so much is uncertain, I hope we all find ways, big or small, to channel our energy into kindness - for each other and toward the planet." Amy Papiransky : "I live hours away from where I was brought up and don’t get to go home as much as I would like. I am REALLY looking forward to quality time with my close family and friends – it’s what Christmas is all about. We are staying with my uncle ...

Music Observer Friday highlights - 25.03.22

Last week was a pretty busy week, with lots of new music to choose from - here are my top picks. Remember, the below (and lots of others) all feature on my March 2022 playlist . Nice Guy - Tonight See my full write-up here . Holy Coves - The Hurt Within Described as "Welsh psych-rock", all I know is that this is a punchy and engaging listen, with a difference. The song opens under lifting darkness, and develops gradually into something subtly anthemic and firmly rock-and-roll. There are pulsating drums and pleasingly discordant guitars throughout, while effect-swathed vocals maintain a hovering presence. I'm really interested to hear where this band goes next. Photo: Dai Eastwood A Cause In Distress - Submission There's something intriguing and mysterious about this track. I enjoy the combination of electro fuzz, rapid beats and guitar sounds, especially when combined with these poetic and clearly heartfelt vocals. 'Submission' is the fourth sing...

Jodie Nicholson: Safe Hands [Album]

I first saw Jodie Nicholson perform at Twisterella Festival '21. It was one of those unforgettable live music moments - an extended time of pin-drop hush and electric tension. A great memory. But it was a short festival set, and I've been wanting to hear more from her ever since. More on the live experience soon … for now, there's a beautiful new album to talk about. 'Safe Hands' is such an appropriate name for a record with this level of intimacy and close warmth. It's an embrace, and an expression of Jodie's pure self. There are 12 tracks, and each one is carefully and tenderly built. The whole record is considered and thoughtful, and all of it feels important. Jodie is never one to waste any time in her music, and she's extended that attitude across the whole 49 minutes of the album. It's also somewhat of a progressive record, showing a new side to Jodie while remaining steadfastly true to her innate style, and her constant commitment to quality...

Tove Lo: Dirt Femme [Album]

Tove Lo is a bit of an enigma, in many ways. I’m not quite sure how I managed to avoid knowing about her before last year, or exactly how I became aware of her (awesome) music. I think it was through hearing a cover of ‘Habits (Stay High)’ by Greysha but, as with many things Lo-related, I can’t be entirely sure. What else is mysterious about Lo? It’s her ability to transcend pop/alt-dance boundaries; she writes very good songs, in the most traditional sense of the word, but those songs are anything but traditional. They’re beautifully structured, bringing a real sense of satisfaction as you listen; they’re highly varied in their themes and style; and they’re delivered in a way which is frequently surprising: the smile-factor is strong with Lo. This album, ‘Dirt Femme’, has been on my playlist since its release in November, and on my mind almost continuously. The delay in getting this blog post finished has been entirely due to my struggle to translate what I feel and hear from this re...

The Felice Brothers: Inferno

Here's another of those songs that's been haunting me for some time; today I finally got the message and sat down to share a few thoughts. The Felice Brothers are a pretty special band, blending US folk, country, rock and - often - rich nature references. And this is a very special song about " the persistence of certain mundane memories ". I have so much respect for people who are able to write so captivatingly well about minor points of shared human experience; things which most of us may never really stop to ponder, let alone produce art about. The song starts understatedly with dark guitars set in a landscape of reverb, and then what may sound at first like the beginning of a typical love story: "We were 17, hoping for better things". But then the uniqueness of The Felice Brothers begins to take hold, with an unexpected metaphor of "worms waiting for wings and high school rings". This is a song where the lyrics are at the fore. Instrumentally t...
