Every so often a song comes along which leaves me speechless. 'Through' is one of those songs. Carla Aakre is a Helsinki-based singer-songwriter who has a profound and rare ability to focus in, very closely, on small details – brief, fleeing moments and gestures which paradoxically say so much. With a piece of music like this, I sometimes need time to let it sink in. There's an immediate reaction when I listen and am struck dumb; but I need to give some time and space before I come back and try to write something vaguely coherent. 'Through' begins (after a moment of studio chatter) with softened piano chords, accompanied by minimalistic drums and the hint of a violin note. That sound of strings is like a hanging moment of suspense, held in the air, balancing on the edge of something yet unexplored. It's an unrequited promise, a faraway glimpse of beauty. Grace Calver: My Life and Its Disasters [EP]

It’s just over a year since Grace Calver released arguably one of the best ever songs related to the undead - her debut single, ‘Zombie Conversations’ - pivoting from popular music blogger to accomplished artist in a way which felt natural and preordained. And now, here’s her debut EP, building on the success and catchiness of that first release. The brilliantly named 'My Life and Its Disasters' is five tracks of Grace Calver's well polished, finely honed brand of dream-pop-meets-grunge, sugar-coated angst rock. It’s an infectious, deceptively innocent style of writing - like a rainbow with a pot of boiling oil at the end. And let's also not forget that Grace plays all the tuned instruments, too, leaving only the drums to be outsourced (in this case to Oscar Liddiard). Holly Humberstone + Medium Build: O2 Academy, Leicester [Live]

I make no secret of the fact that I'm a Holly Humberstone fan. I've written about her on this blog and elsewhere several times (I’m still buzzing from getting the chance to interview her for LeftLion recently ) and I've enjoyed following her progress and witnessing her growing confidence over the past couple of years. I'm not sure whether it's the local connection, her honesty, her relatability or her determination that appeals most – I think it's a combination of all of those, and of course the rich, reflective songs she writes. After having the opportunity in 2023 to see her headlining Barn on the Farm festival and then presenting her album in a stripped-back show in Nottingham , I was really looking forward to seeing her perform a full-length headline show. Charlotte Carpenter: Awakenings [Interview]

I've been a fan of Charlotte Carpenter’s honest, engaging and absolutely beautiful music for some time now, and I recently had the pleasure of, finally, seeing her perform live. It was a full band show at Firebug in Leicester, and did not disappoint. She creates poetic, intense, beautifully dramatic music and words; and she invests fully, putting her whole self into that art. She’s also fully independent, and very proud of it. IDLES: TANGK [Album]

This is the closest I've come to doing a reaction post: I wrote most of this during my first listen through this, the second album from IDLES. In summary, I think I was right to be excited about this one ... 'TANGK' is described by the band as being made in love, and all about love; an "album of beauty and power" . Love isn't always fluffy and cuddly, or sweet, or gentle, or even, necessarily, happy. And that's what Joe Talbot, Mark Bowen, Jon Beavis, Adam Devonshire and Lee Kiernan have discovered and attempted to translate into words and music here. The record starts with twinkling piano, the beating of a drum, grinding shimmery guitars. There's a sense of sense of ominous approach. We're in for a beating, maybe. But, then, Joe's voice comes in surprisingly gentle and strangely soothing. This is 'IDEA 01', and through it IDLES return to old-fashioned storytelling.
