Writing this blog has given me so many new music experiences, and I’ve been introduced to more artists than I can count, sometimes through word of mouth in the new music community, sometimes through a serendipitous working of The Algorithm, and occasionally through direct approaches from artists or their reps. I have to confess I hadn’t heard the name Amy Papiransky before I received a PR email with a preview of her new album ‘Friday’s Daughter’ (look out for my review of the record for CLASH in October). Amy is a well-connected artist, and for the new album she’s assembled some amazing collaborators and has described recording it as “the best musical experience I’ve ever had.” I was intrigued to find about a bit more about her, and she generously gave up some of her time to answer a few of my questions. Dolores Forever: Rough Trade East, London [Live]

At the end of September, Dolores Forever released one of the very best albums of the year so far, their debut 'It's Nothing'. I'll shamelessly quote myself here: "The record is richly modern and at the same time soaked in a 1980s vibe. It’s Ataris and Roland synths, plugged into a modern, forward-looking digital interface. Transistor punk, perhaps? Lyrically, the songs in this collection are very clear, with plenty of brilliant one-liners and metaphors forming a close-to tangible imagery" (read more over on CLASH ). I've been genuinely excited about this band and the album really cemented my belief in them. But I'd not heard them live (although I'd seen and heard plenty of good reports) until last week when I caught their album launch / in-store at Rough Trade East. Amber Saqladi: Becoming a modern-day Siren [Interview]

Amber Saqladi began her journey as a song-writer scribbling poetry at age seven, before graduating to writing songs with a felt-tipped pen on sheets of A3 paper. But it took some time for this pastime to evolve into a way of life. "It's always been something I've done but it was never anything I really took seriously growing up. I was a very academic kid, so that's what I expected to do," Amber explains. By 15, though, she had started writing music more seriously, and gigging. "Since then, it's become undeniable that that's the thing I enjoy the most - being able to be creative, and be academic at the same time," she says. Amber quickly established herself as a familiar name on the music scene in her home town of Leicester, where she also recorded her first three singles at HQ Studios . Cappo: S.T.A.R.V.E. [Album]

Nottingham produces incredible music with a very distinct local character. There's a certain atmosphere and sensibility which pervades the work of its musicians, people like Catmilk, Lace Thief or Drew Thomas. One key member of the local scene for around 20 years has been Cappo , a hip-hop artist often labelled 'legendary'. Rightly so. His brand of rap is cerebral, deep, hard-hitting and exploratory. And his latest work is a perfectly packaged example of what Cappo is all about. Across the nine tracks of the "semi-autobiographical" album ‘S.T.A.R.V.E’., Cappo delivers a richly-layered commentary on society's ills from an intensely personal perspective, drawing on literary tradition as well as hip-hop history and trip hop inspirations. The release of this album comes only a few months after Cappo shared an expansive and intense work called 'Canon'. It was released in three parts, covering three concepts: pain, escapism and absolution. He described it in

I last saw The Howl & The Hum (in the previous incarnation) in January 2022, when I also had the honour of chatting in person with Sam Griffiths . He told me then that a second album was coming and explained that there were only "vague ideas" being worked on at that point. Sam explained he wasn't sure if the album would be a 'Human Contact 2', something about Covid, or a record which would "encapsulate the future that's been stolen from us in a sense." Since then, a lot has changed. That band is no more, but TH&TH has continued nevertheless. And the promised album is now with us. 'Same Mistake Twice' has turned out to be a complicated, varied exploration of Sam's (and our) anxieties, particularly around image and what others think of him.
