'Burning' is Silvi's newest single, released on 29th July and it's an incredible composition. In terms of a song that lives up to its name, you couldn't get a better example. Because 'Burning' is exactly that - a song full of magnificent and defiant heat, from an artist who is publicly exploring her art. It's another tantalising glimpse of the eclectic talent and potential of Silvi (the project name of Scottish singer-songwriter Jodi Findlay).
So, close your eyes and immerse yourself in this song - it's absolutely that kind of music. You can almost hear the flames crackle and the sparks rise. The dark and moody undercurrent overlaid with explosively powerful guitar licks and that oh-so-sultry voice of Jodi's all combine to develop that image perfectly.
It's a dark kind of heat that pervades the song: the kind of heat that draws you in, and makes it very hard to look away from the glowing embers. Towards the end of the song, Jodi's vocals really begin to soar - it's the phoenix rising from the defiantly glowering ashes.
According to Silvi, 'Burning' explores the themes of gaslighting and betrayal. It's a very effective exploration as well as a brilliant exposition of the deep damage that those "villains who strike from the shade" can cause.
"You left my heart in the back seat of the car", Jodi sings with a prowling and bitter kind of passion in the chorus.
But what also comes through to me is a sense of powerful defiance, liberation and rising above that negativity. Listening to 'Burning' leaves you with no doubt that the singer/story-teller isn't going to let those villains win.
I find it hard to believe that Jodi only began committing her music to tape (or the digital equivalent) in 2020, and that 'Burning' is only Silvi's fifth release to date. Lockdown was tough, but it did produce some great art, and Silvi is a perfect example of that. Even more impressively, the first live Silvi gig only took place in February this year and yet, on 21st August, Silvi will be playing a debut headline show at none other than the iconic King Tuts in Glasgow (tickets are available here).
Silvi is self-described as "a disrupter of genre who embraces experimentation without ever losing the signature Silvil spark which burns brighter with each release." This sums things up perfectly; I've been listening to Silvi for about a year, and have found myself more and more drawn in by the musical pictures this artist creates. Each single Silvi has released so far has told me a little more about the artist and the themes Jodi wants to present to the world, and I for one am strongly hoping that there's a longer record on the horizon sometime soon.
Fingers crossed ...
