It's official - Greysha gets the (dubious) honour of being the first artist to feature twice on this blog. She's an absolute star and one to watch.
And her latest release is very, very good. It's a cover of an Olly Murs song, but it's the best kind of cover, one that takes the original song in a completely different direction, interpreting the idea behind the song with an authentic Greysha twist. She's given the song a brooding, dark edge, and bucketfuls of atmosphere.
You get that vibe from the first vinyl crackle, and by the time the hauntingly murky strings come in, the idea is implanted in your mind. This is Greysha giving out beautiful Halloween vibes, never-mind that it's May.
As always, she use her voice wonderfully, at the low end but also in the higher register too, effortlessly going from almost menacing, to soothing in a few seconds.
There are also lots of subtle production touches and small quirks which show the amount of careful crafting that's gone into the song.
First, there's the way she pronounces "two", in a very English way, in "drink or two".
Then, there's the multi-tracked backing vocals in the "Why does it feel so good" segment, Greysha accompanying herself with a slightly gravelly almost spoken voice.
And in the last 10 seconds, a completely captivating and really satisfying slice of electric guitar - heavily reverbed - which comes in like a riff from a 90s Portishead song (I'm thinking Glory Box or Seven Months). In fact, listening to this a few times, I started to pick up some other welcome similarities to Portishead - you get that general flavour from the deliciously dark riffs and instrumentation, and of course that vinyl crackle again.
As if giving us the song itself wasn't spoiling us enough, Greysha's also gone and made a well thought-out and very nicely produced video too - it's embedded below (as well as the usual Spotify player).
This is seriously accomplished artistry, and as always I'm really excited to see what Greysha comes up with next.
* Look out for some live dates - she has one in Birmingham on 17 July and fingers-crossed for some more after that ...
